EV MYTH BUSTING: Loss of Freedom to drive diesel/petrol vehicles?

Taking away the right to drive a diesel/petrol is a loss of freedom?

There hasn't been any explicit threat to strip away the privilege of driving petrol or diesel cars. In fact, the landscape of transportation indicates that combustion engine vehicles will remain a fixture on our roads for at least the next five decades, and potentially even longer. This assurance extends to the continued ability to buy, sell, swap, trade, and drive pre-owned combustion engine cars, as long as there's fuel to power them.

However, a significant shift is on the horizon. The discontinuation of sales for new combustion engine cars and vans is slated for after 2035. Despite this, there's a prevalent misunderstanding among the public that this ban encompasses not only new vehicles but also used ones. This misconception was highlighted in a survey conducted by Auto Trader in October 2023, revealing that seven out of ten respondents mistakenly believed that the 2035 ban applied to both new and used vehicles.

The Government's messaging surrounding this transition has been criticised for its lack of clarity, inadvertently fuelling confusion and contributing to a contentious culture war surrounding electric vehicles (EVs). Nevertheless, it's crucial to understand that existing petrol or diesel car owners need not worry. The freedom to continue driving these vehicles remains intact, unaffected by the transition to electric mobility. So, rest assured, you can continue to enjoy your petrol or diesel car for as long as you desire without fear of it being confiscated.
